Sponsoring a child at the Flying Kites Leadership Academy (FKLA) is a meaningful way to support the work of Flying Kites and build a lasting relationship with a child in our care. The gift of sponsorship is more than just a contribution to our organization; it allows you, our friends and supporters, to see first-hand how much of an impact you are making in the life of an orphaned child. Donations to the sponsorship program do not directly benefit an individual child, but are used to supplement the cost of caring for all the orphaned children at Flying Kites. We use a traditional one-on-one sponsorship model to develop meaningful relationships that benefit both donor and child. The level and frequency of communications between child and sponsor varies depending on the level of the giving commitment.

Types of Sponsorship

Flying Kites offers four levels of sponsorship open to individuals, businesses, schools, organized groups or clubs, and anyone looking to honor a loved one by giving in their name.

Sponsors at every level will receive correspondence from their sponsored child, and be kept up to date about schooling, extra curricular activities, and happenings at FKLA. Sponsors are welcome to select the child they would like to sponsor (by age or gender) or Flying Kites will select a child in need.

Sponsorship payments can be made in monthly or yearly increments. To sign-up to become a sponsor, please select the level of sponsorship you are interested in and click the sponsor now button in the same category. Once your sponsorship payment is processed, a representative from Flying Kites will contact you to select your sponsored child.

Rafiki Level - $12/month or $144/year

Rafiki means "friend" in Swahili, the national language of Kenya. Become a friend to a child at FKLA and show him/her that real friendships can exist beyond borders.

Wakili Level - $30/month or $360/year

When you sign up to be a sponsor at the Wakili level you are acting as an "advocate" for an orphaned child at Flying Kites. You are displaying your belief in his/her right to a quality home life and education.

How will my sponsorship donation be spent?

Flying Kites is focused on a sustainable model for both the Flying Kites Leadership Academy and the organization as a whole. We strive to create an environment that considers all of a child's needs from daily care, diet and nutrition, to quality of education, and medical care, while at the same time anticipating and preparing for a child's future needs. Your sponsorship donation helps Flying Kites and its programs to provide children with the tools they need to reach their full potential. It has been our experience that the most successful sponsorship model is one that combines your sponsorship donation with those of other sponsors to ensure that each child at Flying Kites is given equal opportunities and treatment as their collective needs are met. Therefore, we do not give sponsorship donations directly to each child.

Will I be a child's only sponsor?

Due to continuously rising costs as we expand our programs, and increased numbers of children admitted to our Home, a child at the Flying Kites Leadership Academy may have multiple sponsors at different giving levels. This ensures that all of our children's needs are being met regardless of the number of sponsors he or she has. This also allows us to cover the costs associated with caring for multiple children should existing sponsors choose not to renew their sponsorship commitment each year.

Is my sponsorship tax deductible?

Yes. Our tax identification number is 20-5946832. Online donors who provide contact information will receive immediate acknowledgement of their gift via e- mail. If you pay by cash or check, you will receive a tax acknowledgement letter in the mail. Please be sure to provide your current mailing address.

Can I send correspondence or gifts to the child I sponsor?

Flying Kites encourages sponsors to send written correspondence and small tokens to their sponsored children. Letters and small packages can be sent to our Newport office where they will be collected and stored until they can be sent to Kenya with a traveling volunteer or staff member. While small gifts are permitted, we strongly discourage sending large gifts and packages to your sponsored child as transporting them to Kenya can be difficult and costly. Our staff in Kenya monitor gifts to make sure they are age-appropriate and not likely to incite jealousy or create feelings of isolation in other children. We ask that sponsors be sensitive to their sponsored child's circumstances

Can I sponsor a child as a gift to someone?

Yes. When you enter your payment and contact information please indicate in the memo line if the gift is being made in honor of someone. Please provide their name and contact information so that we may inform them of your gift and send them correspondence from their sponsored child.
