Oasis Hosts Community Music Festival in Kibera, Nairobi
Saturday, August 20, 2011
On Saturday, August 20th, Flying Kites and GoodMakers Films successfully hosted the first annual Oasis Community Music Festival, a cross-cultural, free live music event held in Kibera, Africa’s largest slum.
The Oasis Festival featured Kenyan pop stars, including Jimmy Gait, Daddy Owen, the comedian Eric Omondi, the 2008 Malta Guinness Pan-African Street Dance champions Dashy Krew, local Kibera artists, as well as song, dance, and spoken word performances by children from Oasis Member Homes located throughout Nairobi.
For the two weeks leading up to the festival, children from five Oasis Member Homes were selected to participate in workshops, led by Dashy Krew and the GoodMakers StreetTeam, with the goal of fostering self empowerment, creative expression, and giving a voice to orphaned and vulnerable children and youth from Nairobi.
The Oasis Festival and accompanying documentary film promote the Flying Kites Oasis Program, which partners with and builds the capacity of orphanages and children's homes throughout Nairobi. The documentary is a cross-cultural collaboration between Flying Kites Global (Kenya/USA), GoodMakers Films (Los Angeles, USA) and Hot Sun Films (Kibera, Kenya).
