Exemplary Care

1. Remarkable Care

Our strategy demands that the basic requirements are met before the more complex issues can be addressed. A vision of providing high quality care for children demands a strong foundation. It was a lack of this foundation at orphanages and institutions in the slums of Nairobi that drove us to seek land outside of the city. Our site in the Aberdare Mountains provides abundant fresh water, plentiful and nutritious food, clean air, and space for the children to play.

Home
Central to the design of our site is the Family House. By living in small family houses, rather than in conventional dormitories, our children will participate in the many facets of Kenyan life. Each building will house no more than fifteen children who will be cared for by two house parents. Carefully chosen and intensively trained, these staff members give the children the same love and guidance as a traditional family. At full operating capacity, we aim to have 150 children living in ten separate houses.

School
Education is, of course, the only way for a child to permanently break free from the cycle of poverty. Our three-year goal is to be accredited to teach the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma program. The IB organization is one of the world’s leading providers of academic curricula. It is a highly demanding curriculum, taking a comprehensive approach to a child’s development with community service playing an important role alongside the academic syllabus. With an IB diploma, Flying Kites graduates will be able to study anywhere in the world and, furthermore, in most universities in the United States the recipient is exempt from first-year courses. We will be the first children’s home to receive IB certification.
