Building Higher Expectations

Research on early childhood growth has consistently shown that providing children with a safe and nurturing home environment is central to the development of healthy young adults.
The Flying Kites community - modeled after a traditional African homestead - will be made up of ten individual homes accommodating fifteen children and two houseparents. The homes have been designed to create communal spaces for the family while also providing personal space for each child.
Our on-site school and qualified staff prepare our students to be successful, compassionate world citizens. Through our emphasis on excellence, advocacy, and leadership, we hope our children will champion causes of social justice.
Our site in the Aberdares Mountains of Central Kenya provides abundant riches: fruit from the orchard, vegetables and meat from the farm, fresh water from the mountain spring, and the simple joys of growing up in the countryside.
While the plans for our buildings reflect our insistence on quality, intelligent design can be affordable. By using local materials and techniques, we will ensure that our homes cost no more per square foot than more institutional childcare facilities.
Our home and school buildings were designed by architect Paul Weber of Newport, Rhode Island, USA, in collaboration with architects Maranga Njoroge and Roy Maina of Nairobi, Kenya. Plans for our landscape were designed by Tanya Kelley. Both Paul Weber and Tanya Kelly provided their services pro-bono.
